Car Service Checklist for High-Mileage Vehicles in Dandenong

In Melbourne’s south-east, plenty of vehicles are doing serious work — long commutes to the city, tradie runs to work sites, family cars covering multiple school runs a day. When a vehicle hits 150,000km, 200,000km, or beyond, it doesn’t mean it’s time to replace it — but it does mean your service regime needs to step up.

At Nexon Auto Parts in Dandenong, we work with a lot of high-mileage vehicles and their owners. Here’s the checklist we recommend.

Engine Oil and Filter — Every 5,000–7,500km

For high-mileage engines, shorter oil change intervals are worthwhile. Older engines can have more internal wear, meaning more particles and contaminants in the oil. A quality high-mileage specific oil (these contain seal conditioners and extra detergents) can extend the life of an ageing engine significantly.

Coolant / Antifreeze — Check Every Service, Replace Every 2 Years

Old coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors and becomes acidic, attacking cooling system components from the inside. At high mileage, the cooling system is under more stress — especially in Melbourne’s summer heat. Flush and replace coolant on schedule and inspect hoses and the radiator for signs of deterioration.

Transmission Fluid — Every 40,000–60,000km

Many manufacturers list transmission fluid as a ‘lifetime fill’ but this really means ‘for the duration of the warranty’. At high mileage, old transmission fluid becomes dark, smells burnt, and loses its lubricating and friction-modifying properties. A fluid change at 150,000km+ is one of the best investments you can make in a high-mileage vehicle.

Spark Plugs — Every 30,000–60,000km (Standard) or Per Service Schedule

Worn spark plugs cause misfires, poor fuel economy, and hard starting. They’re inexpensive to replace and make a noticeable difference in engine performance and fuel efficiency. High-mileage engines with any sign of misfiring should have plugs replaced as a first step.

Brake Fluid — Every 2 Years

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time. This lowers its boiling point, which can cause brake fade under heavy braking. In a high-mileage vehicle that may have original or old brake fluid, this is a genuine safety concern. It’s a cheap service item that most people overlook.

Drive Belts and Timing Belt/Chain

A snapped timing belt is catastrophic on an interference engine — it bends valves and destroys the engine. Timing belts should be replaced on schedule regardless of appearance. If your vehicle has a timing belt rather than a chain, this is non-negotiable. Also inspect accessory drive belts for cracking or glazing.

Suspension and Steering Inspection

High-mileage vehicles accumulate wear in suspension components — shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links, and bushings. Worn suspension affects handling, tyre wear, and safety. Have these inspected annually and replaced when wear is detected.

Battery

Most car batteries last 4–5 years. A high-mileage vehicle that’s had the same battery for several years is running on borrowed time — particularly in Melbourne’s summer heat, which degrades batteries significantly.
