Being involved in a vehicle accident is a disorienting experience. Even a minor collision can leave you shaken and unsure of what to do next. In the immediate aftermath, having a clear mental framework helps you stay safe, protect your legal position, and get your vehicle dealt with efficiently.
This guide walks you through each step — from the moment of impact through to vehicle recovery.
1. Check for Injuries — People First
Before anything else, check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Call 000 immediately if anyone is injured, no matter how minor it seems. Some injuries — particularly soft tissue and head injuries — may not be immediately apparent. Err on the side of calling for an ambulance.
2. Secure the Scene
If the vehicles can be moved safely, move them out of the flow of traffic. Turn on hazard lights. If vehicles cannot be moved and are blocking traffic, call the police — on a major road like Princes Highway or EastLink, a blocked lane is a serious hazard.
3. Exchange Information
Under Victorian law, all drivers involved in an accident must exchange details. Gather:
- Full name, address, and contact number of all other drivers
- Driver’s licence number of all drivers
- Vehicle registration number, make, model, and colour
- Insurance company name and policy number
- Names and contact details of witnesses if any are present
Don’t admit fault at the scene — even if you believe you were at fault, fault determination is a legal and insurance matter, not a roadside one.
4. Document Everything
Use your phone to photograph everything you can: the position of all vehicles, damage to all vehicles, skid marks, road conditions, traffic signals or signs, and any visible injuries. Photograph the scene from multiple angles before anything is moved if it’s safe to do so.
5. Report the Accident
In Victoria, you must report an accident to police within 24 hours if anyone is injured, or if the combined property damage exceeds $3,000, or if you were unable to exchange details at the scene (for example, if the other driver fled). Even if reporting isn’t legally required, it’s wise to have a record.
6. Notify Your Insurer
Call your insurer as soon as possible after the accident — ideally the same day. Many policies require prompt notification, and delays can complicate claims. Your insurer will guide you on the repair and recovery process.
